http://www.encognitive.comThe idea of mental illness as a biological entity is easy to refute. In 1988, Seymour S. Kety, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience in Psychiatry, and Steven Matthysse, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychobiology, both of Harvard Medical School, said "an impartial reading of the recent literature does not provide the hoped-for clarification of the catecholamine hypotheses, nor does compelling evidence emerge for other biological differences that may characterize the brains of patients with mental disease" In 1992 a panel of experts assembled by the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment concluded: "Many questions remain about the biology of mental disorders. In fact, research has yet to identify specific biological causes for any of these disorders. ... Mental disorders are classified on the basis of symptoms because there are as yet no biological markers or laboratory tests for them."Columbia University psychiatry professor Jack M. Gorman, M.D., said "We really do not know what causes any psychiatric illness."Another Columbia University psychiatry professor, Jerrold S. Maxmen, M.D., said "It is generally unrecognized that psychiatrists are the only medical specialists who treat disorders that, by definition, have no definitively known causes or cures. ... A diagnosis should indicate the cause of a mental disorder, but as discussed later, since the etiologies of most mental disorders are unknown, current diagnostic systems can't reflect them." Psychiatrist Peter Breggin, M.D., said "there is no evidence that any of the common psychological or psychiatric disorders have a genetic or biological component." http://www.encognitive.com

it might be disturbing but its the complete truth. What do you mean treatable? there is nothing to treat period. the only reason they are "treating" is because the medication is so incredibly harsh on a persons mind. its all a bunch of fucking bull shit and diagnosing people is making them more satisfied because they are told they have a sickness that indifferents them from others, when in reality its just a sickness everyone has

maybe having a bad life might make you sad? go figure. I do beleive that it can become a survival mechanism that people kling to their depression as a means of survival. you get dumped, you feal bad. I've been through lots of shrinks and mental hospitals and none of them ever helped me understand what was going on. they in not so many words told me to keep my chin up and move on.

This is extremely disturbing! IF a chemical in balance is not the cause..then what is??? Science has also shown how certain "chemicals" found in the food we eat afffect our mood for the better or worse.( I have taken Omega 3 for my mood, recently Neurovi, com and it really DOES help..) Even if there is NO test to prove mental illness the fact is, they exist, are real, and are treatable..

"Nobody takes Thomas Szasz seriously". Talk about being out of the loop. The professions psychology and psychiatry are based on belief. You also speak of neuroscience. Tell me what neuroscientific tests psychiatrists perform?
tezfezel (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
Psychiatry does do a lot of stupid things, one of which is to suggest that current labels that classify mental illness denote real, discoverable categories. Sometimes they do, but this mode of thinking is essentialist, and is seriously outdated. As for Szasz, it seems likes you have been out of the neuroscience loop for the last 40 years. Nobody takes that guy seriously. I mean his arguments have been dissected by hundreds of intellectuals. You would know this, had you taken Intro Psychology...

Thanks for the reply. I actually do think that helps. I never said I was against that model. I wrote the comment so long ago, I forgot what I was commenting on. Anyways, I don't think anyone thinks that "just pumping drugs" in a person will help. I understand that how it pans out many times, but I still don't think people really think that is the absolute cure. The problem with the other model is it needs to be comprehensive....and I think it is financially advantageous for just using meds

I believe what he means is that the brain is way too complex an organism just to say, "okay, this drug will lower levels of a certain neurotransmitter, this will work". We're nowhere near the kind of medical capability required for a complete biological cure. Instead that we should be looking much more at options such as therapy, empowerment of the patient and social rehabilitation rather than pumping sufferers full of potentially dangerous drugs. Hope that helps =)

Please go to Yahoo and type in "Horrible Truth About Psychiatric Drugs" to see a research paper exposing these drugs. Also so the search "Documented Proof Psychiatric Drugs Shorten Lifespan". Be sure to include the quotes. You will learn information no psychiatrist will tell you. These drugs destroy fertility and libido and cause impotence and extream disphoria and obesity. The promote suicide and violence not prevent it.
